TAROT CARDS
Answers to Your
Questions on Tarot
“A prisoner devoid of books, had he a Tarot of which
he knew how to make use, might in a Few years possess a universal science,
and Discourse on all possible subjects with an Unequalled doctrine
and inexhaustible Eloquence.” So said Eliphas Levi. And so right
he was.. Tarot can be a spiritual guide or a friend to show your
future.
A Tarot deck consists of 78 cards divided into two
parts or ‘Arcanas’ as they are called, ‘Major’ and ‘Minor’. The Major
Arcana, or trump suit, consists of twenty two cards. Each card has a
different picture which illustrates an action, behavior and/or event. Each
card has a label, which is a name, a title, or a description of the
picture on the card. They are numbered ‘zero’ to ‘twenty one’.
The
remaining fifty-six cards in the deck are called the Minor Arcana. These
are divided into four suits: Swords, Cups, Coins, Wands. There are
fourteen cards in each suit: ten numbered (or pip) cards, from Ace to Ten,
and four face (or court) cards: Page, Knight, Queen, and
King.
There are many theories about the origin of the Tarot, but no
one knows for certain where and how the cards were first developed. Some
of the proposed origins are the Chinese divination system called I Ching,
some say the Book of Thoth, still some claim it is of Egyptian origin, or
the Gnostics, the early Christian sect. Another theory suggests that the
Tarot philosophy was derived from that of the Cabala. Whatever the
origin of the Tarot, it is clear that the symbolism on the cards is
universal, speaking to many different cultures and philosophies. People of
all religions, ethnic, or national backgrounds have used the Tarot for
their benefit.
